Adult Acne

Adult acne is a regular problem encountered during adolescence. Hormonal fluctuations in case for women cause adult acne.

Excess of male hormones called as androgens that are generally attributed by acne. Androgens stimulated the production of waxy, oily sebum by sebaceous glands in the dermis associated with acne.

Over production of sebum may also leads to clogged pores in the skin and a rapid growth of bacteria. There are many effective treatments as well as medications are available for acne.

The symptom of adult acne areas follows:

• pustules sometimes filled with pus,
• open, plugged oil glands which are known as blackheads
• closed, plugged oil glands which are known as whiteheads

Treating adult acne through a cream or a lotion or use of appropriate chemical is possible which will curb bacterial growth. A certain type of acids or sulphur or other chemicals will only have the effect of causing existing eruptions to get peeled and dried up.

Topical antibiotics like clindamycin, erythromycin and others kill bacteria and are available with a doctor’s prescription. Oral antibiotics are more effective and both involved killing acne in the development of adult acne.

Retinoid is also available with doctor’s prescription, which are derived from vitamin A which is common and useful in adult acne treatment. The mostly used retinoid is Tretinoin in treating acne, but it can irritate your skin.

Tretinoin and two similar potential less irritated drugs, adapalene and tazarotene are available only by the doctor’s prescription. Another acne for adults treatment is azelaic acid, an anti-bacterial agent for mild and moderate acne.

The powerful retinoid is isotetinoin, when you take orally rather than applying topically like tretinoin.

For severe acne for adults Isotretinoin is more effective. But it has side effects, such as impaired night vision, dry skin, muscle and joint aches, chapped lips, increased sun sensitivity, hair shining, and headache.

This drug is known as cause severe birth defects and must not be taken during pregnancy.
