Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is one of the most severe forms of acne in which small cysts are formed. It is also referred to as nodulocystic acne due to the presence of lobule-like structures.

In cystic acne, the lobules are formed as a result of inflammation and not because of any abnormal growth of skin. Owing to this fact, acne cysts are not recognized as true cysts.

Causes: -

Cystic acne is caused due to entrapment of sebum in the skin pores as seen in other forms of acne. It is not caused due to lack of hygiene and cleanliness. Some of the principle causes for cystic acne include the following: -

1. Over-activity of oil secreting glands
2. Entrapment of dead cells of the skin within the skin pore, and
3. Bacteria that can stay inside the clogged follicles.

When the wall of the infected hair follicle ruptures, it leads to inflammation and consequent spread of infection to other parts of the body. If this rupture takes place near the surface of the skin, it will result in minor blemishes that can be easily cured; however, if it takes place deep inside the skin layers, it is more likely to cause severe lesions. When the ruptured materials infect adjacent follicles it leads to formation of nodules or cystic acne.

Symptoms: -

Cystic acne commonly affects teenagers and young men. It is also hereditary in nature in some cases. It is commonly affects the face, back, chest, upper arms and shoulders. White pus-like matters are trapped inside these cysts.

These cysts are usually larger in size as compared to ordinary pimples and can cause quite a lot of pain.

If these cysts are not treated with the proper antibiotic and medicinal cream, it may result in the formation of permanent scars that are difficult to remove.

Even after cystic acne has been completely cured, pseudo scars or macules can be formed which resembles a cyst in form and structure but they disappear after a few days unlike permanent scars.
