Severe Acne |
Woe besets a teenager's life once his or her complexion becomes acne-vated. Preening one's self in the mirror is a task getting harder and harder to do. Seeing one or two bumps of pimple on the face already send waves of panic to the brain, tending to trigger hormones that pump up the sebacious glands to produce
more oil.
"Stop freaking out", cry the sebacious glands, "you're only causing me to produce oil faster than an oil rig!" Unfortunately, sebacious glands can't send their
own wave messages so the oil keeps leaking out on to the skin.
Now here's the scenario: tiny germs called "acne-bacillus" that live near the hair follicles jump up with
glee as they see oil flooding the skin surface, making it a perfect breeding ground.
Little bag-like structures around the hair follicles are now filled with bacteria, swimming
in oil, blood cells then later, pus. Voila! The simple pimple is now fast becoming a case of "severe acne" problem. |
|
On the loco motor side of the brain, the same panic waves were received by the hands, making them a little busier than usual. The teenager peers closer and
closer to the mirror and turns his head in which ever angle those little red bumps can be best pricked.
The fingers zero-in on their target then successfully pops out the
contents of the little bag-like structure. A couple more of those bacillus guys getting into the action will cause an infection that will push the acne problem into a full-fledge
state.Wait till he sees more and more blemishes spreading out on his face, his back and even on his neck. |

Seriously now, it's time to seek professional help or the teenager will become scarred for life. A doctor called dermatologist specializes in skin care and treatment.
The aim of the dermatologist is to put the acne problem under control, mainly because this type of skin disorder is incurable. Topical cream, gel or lotion may be prescribed
and if necessary an antibiotic generically known as "tetracycline".
Salicylic or glycolic acids are resorted to for gentle skin peeling in order to unclog blocked pores. The
skin problem should be well under control within three months, otherwise, the therapy not the dermatologist, has to be changed.
Medication varies according to the type
of bacteria present, while for some, factors such as lifestyles, nutritional intakes, food preferences and stress tolerance contribute to the uncontrollability of a skin disorder.
The scars brought about by the squeezing and pricking can be removed by a process called "microdermabrasion". |
This process involves the removal of the dead
cells on the skin's upper layer, to give room for generation of new ones and to improve surface irregularities of the skin.
In all cases, the occurrence of a skin problem can be avoided by a simple practice of cleanliness and proper nutrition. Young people, usually ages 13 and above
are the usual sufferers of severe acne, due to hormonal changes while going through adolescence.
Lack of information or intentional disregard for proper diet, sleeping habits
and waste discharge contribute largely in having all types of skin disorders. Parents of these adolescents should make it a point to guide their young ones in this new phase
while the youths themselves should breakaway from the habit of not listening to their parents.
